Personality: Mark often decides to take what happens to him in stride ("It's Tuesday") and in some sense comes across as extremely easygoing (and maybe to those who aren't close to him or knows enough about him - he comes across as someone who is entirely undisciplined or someone who lacks maturity or the ability to be serious). For example, when he is asked to be photographed from the surface of Mars to prove that he is still alive - he pulls a "Fonzie" from Happy Days to the dismay of the P.R. department. He also makes numerous wisecracks and random observations about meaningless topics throughout his many logs ("Aquaman being able to control whales when whales are mammals and not fish" for example.)
He rarely shows any real concern, anger, or fear in stressful situations and instead opts to crack a joke or laugh instead. It is stated in canon, that it was his ability to make a stressful situation light, along with his winning personality, that made it possible for him to even be chosen for the Ares 3 mission. It was the very way he carried himself and views things that made him mesh well with everyone else and helped with the crew's chemistry with each other. When he does show any sort of stress, he tends to go straight to cursing (usually showing a tendency to use phases such as "I'm fucked") and in one circumstance took to cowering in a rover when he became aware that he had created a ticking time bomb out of his shelter. However, this does not keep him down for too long and he quickly recovers and tries to find his way out of trouble.
It is debatable if some of his jokes are signs of him having a bit of an ego or if he's just trying to keep himself calm. He tends to refer to himself as a number of "crazy" things such as "the King of Mars" or a "space pirate". He also seems to take a bit of amused tone when he realizes that because of the situation he is stuck in - he has become the highest ranking member of the crew and therefore in charge. He also is shown to be a bit dismayed or even irritated that NASA wants multiple experts back on Earth to double check his work and even states in a message back to them to tell those experts that their mothers and sisters were "prostitutes".
It is also heavily shown that he is very forgiving towards the actions of the rest of the crew and is understanding on why he had been left behind and thought of as dead. He even admits that when his suit was damaged, his vitals would have disappeared on the other crew members' suits and that along with the object piercing through his own suit - how could they not believe he died? However, he has tremendous respect for them, especially his commander. But he can also be rather harsh on others when he has no respect or feels there is none to be had for someone - he thinks less than highly of other students in his major during his undergrad days. He claims his reasoning is that he was there for the science of it and not for any "new world order bullshit" that the kids around him seemed to there for. (Well, he admitted they often tried to spend time thinking of new ways to grow pot too.)
Mark also does have a tendency to think more positively about mankind than most people. He states that if an earthquake happens then people from all over the world send supplies and aid of all kinds. If someone goes missing on a mountain? People organize searches. He will admit that there are those who "don't give a shit" but overall, most people do.
He also is stubborn in the sense that he His other most seen trait is his ability to quickly think and come up with solutions. Only 30 days worth of rations for the entire crew? Ration it. Still not enough food? Discovers potatoes meant for the crew to prepare Thanksgiving dinner? Let's attempt to grow potatoes. Need more water? Attempt to burn hydrogen but removing the oxygen from the place so a giant explosion can't result. But the potatoes will die without oxygen? Easy, place them outside and then lower the Hab's temperature. Oh, a problem - he may have created a time bomb out of his "house" because a little bit of oxygen was released by his breathing? He deals with things in stride and can come up with solutions and then more solutions for when those don't work as planned. He also tends to find solutions by using a little more than duct tape and string - he has a creative mind on top of one that is quick
Why do you think your character will work in this setting?
I feel like Mark will work in this type of setting because of his experiences. He is someone who is in a difficult situation and while ending up in New Dodge was not something he planned on or would be considered his "ideal" escape from that situation - he will take knowing that he's alive and not in any mortal danger. He will probably also find it interesting how this place exists when mankind was only starting to do missions to Mars in his world. He also is someone who has a way about him that should allow him to easily make friends or at least acquaintances. He also has a quick mind and creative way of thinking which would make him useful in difficult situations.
What will your character do for work?
Considering he has a undergrad and a masters in botany and some working knowledge in other scientific areas (though not nearly as extensive as his knowledge in botany)? Also, he is already experienced with interstellar travel? Most likely I can picture Mark either helping with research of some sort or working in agriculture. Maybe managing to do both things? However, he will probably spend his first couple weeks just taking it easy and trying to adjust to New Dodge. He may surprise people. He tends to do that sometimes.
How do you plan to expand their CR?
Mark is pretty social so he probably wouldn't have much trouble getting involved in town affairs, especially when his area of expertise is concerned. He probably will be a "brother" type figure to at least one person or even a "smart ass" friend.

All of a sudden, his world had become very dark and very silent. It also felt very slow, at least until that goddamned beeping began to sound. It was loud and it only served to remind him that he was still tired. A bit more sleep, he silently thought, just a few more minutes. He wanted to turn onto his side but he felt unable to do so and internally shrugged it off as being wrapped a bit too tightly in his sheet. Besides, he wasn't feeling so great. Maybe a sick day was in order?
He could almost hear what she would have to say about that and he found himself mildly amused and completely convinced that he would have to be dying to miss a day of work. She ran a tight ship. She expected a lot out of everyone and placed just as much on herself, if not more. But, until she threatened to lift him out of the bunk or dump cold water on him (the latter was much less likely with rations and all) - he was just going to stay here and deal with this weird feeling and sleep in some sort of peace.
He found himself internally musing, "She usually did better than just annoying him with an alarm too. "
But the beeping just kept getting louder and louder and he found himself nearly groaning and mumbling something like "Lewis, don't place that clock near me.
Then Mark finally opened his eyes.

SOL, Day...um...whatever this is: 1
Well, this is something.
Maybe I hit my head and I'm having some sort of hallucination? Or I could just dreaming and that antenna is still sticking through me? And the last sols and whatever this place is supposed to be is some sort of dream? I mean, I think you're supposed to see your life flash before your eyes before you die. At least that's what all those nuts who go on TV claim.
Boy, that would be depressing, wouldn't it?
Also, I don't see any gates. No angels strumming harps either. Then again, I did destroy a wooden cross to make fire with...pretty sure I'm not going to the "good place" if that's even what's there at the end.
I mean things seem real enough. I can't even remember ever having a vivid dream in my life, so I have nothing to go on there and I really didn't pay much attention when I took my required psychology course back in college. I think I might have laughed my way through it. Or slept. Honestly, it doesn't really matter now. I have not one clue on what this whole thing is. But what I'm looking at seems enough like a dream or some movie set from the 1960's or something a little later, but actually not plywood and gum.
With wires. Some lights. A camera. Maybe some plastic alien prop or two that's a glorified toy.
I can feel the ground under the feet and while it's dusty - it's not red and it's not covering solar panels.
Most importantly - air. I kind of need that to live.
Know what? I'm just going to assume this isn't a dying man's dream. I think I can live with denying that possibility.
But a dome.
A goddamned dome.
I feel like I'm some sort of alien ant farm and it almost makes me wish I was just back at the Hab already. Okay, I had humans monitoring me there, but while stressful, that was something I could expect. It made some sort of sense, I mean everyone thought I was dead and everything. Wouldn't you be interested in something like that and be rooting for the best possible outcome? But, at least there's actual food (that's NOT potatoes - or just potatoes, but you get my point) and even booze. (Could you imagine if NASA allowed that on a mission?) And people that aren't going to demand to double check every little thing I decide to do.
That's all great. I'm all for that. Remind me to head over there once everything is set and done. I may be going there a lot since they keep telling me I'm going to be stuck here for a while.
But, I won't be in danger of starving here with any luck. Or dying of thirst. Or dying of a lack of oxygen. Or blowing myself up to make water for plants. Any number of things, really. (With any luck, mind you.) So, in all actuality, I may be significantly less fucked than I was a few hours ago... Which is a start.
I kind of hope whatever doppelganger me they manage to rescue is good enough for my parents and not some zombie-like me.
